The group responsible for keeping Winnipeg clean says city streets are more littered this spring than last year.

An audit released Tuesday byTake Pride Winnipeg gives the city a 2.19 litter Index this year, down slightly from 2.14 in 2014.The litter Index is rated 1 to 4, with a score of 1 representing no litter, and a score of 4 representingextremely littered.

Take Pride Winnipeg divided the city into 12 areas and streets in each area were rated. The audit identifies Transcona as the dirtiest neighbourhood with a litter Index of 2.56.Lagimodiere Boulevard, Regent Avenue and Reenders Drive are the dirtiest streets in Transcona.

Several sections of the Perimeter Highway are heavily littered. Take Pride Winnipeg says a stretch of Broadway, including in front of the Maniitoba Legislature, has a lot of garbage.The site of one of Winnipeg's new fire halls, on the Route 90 and Portage loop, is also singled out.The cleanest neighbourhood is St. Boniface with a Litter Index of 1.85.

Take Pride Winnipeg says so far this spring 25,000 volunteers have been cleaning up garbage.It expects that number to swell to 250 thousand people. The group will release results of the clean-up effort in June.
