Travel restricted over forest fire concerns

Concerns over forest fires in Manitoba's north have prompted the provincial government to place travel restrictions prohibiting back-country travel without a permit.

Concerns over forest fires in Manitoba's north have prompted the provincial government to place travel restrictions prohibiting people fromback-country travel without a permit.

The regions of Cranberry Portage, Flin Flon and Thompson to the northern edge of the province are currently at high-risk of a forest fire breaking out due to persistent dry and hot weather.

The province said that in an effort to quell forest fires, people will not be allowed to camp anywhere but an established campground without a permit.

Boat and canoe travel is restricted to developed shorelines only.

There were nine new fires since Monday, but officials said they were considered small and didn't threaten any homes or property.

Tuesday's news comes as crews battle a 3,000-hectare forest fire at Kisseynew Lake, which is located between Cranberry Portage and Sherridon.

Currently, there are 29 firefighting crews battling the blaze and doing what they can to protect people's property.

Six water bombers, seven helicopters and other equipment are complementing their efforts.

Ten of the fire crews are from Ontario, officials said.
