Winnipeggers who use Westview Park popularly known as Garbage Hill will notice a small section on the south side cordoned off starting Wednesday as crews patch up an areathat has eroded, exposing some of the waste glass and ash buried underneath.

The multi-use park at 1 Midland St.features steep hills coveringa former City of Winnipeglandfill that operated from 1875 to 1948 and contained primarily ash and glass from the city's old garbage incinerator.

One of the steepest hills, located on the south side of the park, has been worn down as people use it for a challenging workout. The erosion has exposed some of the buried waste, according to the city.

Barriers will be put up around an area 60 metres long by 10 metres wide as landscaping crews coverthe worn-down area with compost, grass and wildflower seeds.

The barriers will remain in place until the grass and flowers have grown in, which the city says could take at least a year.
