What to know about the Notre Dame riding for Manitoba's 2023 election

This will be the second election for the riding created in 2018. It saw a voter turnout of 40.9 per cent in 2019, when New Democrat MLA Malaya Marcelino was elected.

The west-central Winnipeg riding Notre Dame was created during the 2018 riding redistribution. It's made up of parts of the old Tyndall Park riding and the former Minto and Logan electoral divisions.

The riding's northern boundary runs along the CP Rail line, while the southern boundary runs along Notre Dame Avenue except for a section between Maryland and Erin streets that goes as south toSargent Avenue. It's bounded to the east by Isabel Street and to the west by Brookside Boulevard.

The riding includes the northern part of the West End, as well as Brooklands, Weston and parts of the West Alexander and Centennial neighbourhoods.

Its population is 22,760, says the province's 2023 riding profile (compiled from the 2021 census).

The median age of the Notre Dame riding is below the Manitoba median, at 35.6 in Notre Dame compared to 38.4 provincewide, the 2023 riding profile and the 2021 census say. The census found the median household income in the area is $67,500.

More facts about Notre Dame:

  • Seventeen per cent of residents reported they speak Tagalog most often at home, the province's 2023 profile says.

  • More than 43.4 per cent of residents identified as immigrants in the 2021 census, the profile says.

  • Almost 83 per cent of immigrants said their country of origin is in Asia.

  • Around 55 per cent of the residents identified as visible minorities.

  • Roughly 21 per cent of residents identified as Indigenous.

As of Sept. 11, the nominated candidates for the 2023 election are:

  • Malaya Marcelino (NDP incumbent).
  • Mufarrah Waheed (Progressive Conservative).
  • Micah Dewey (Green Party).
  • Winston Wuttunee (Liberal).
  • Andrew Taylor (Communist Party of Canada-Manitoba).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after an election has been called. In Notre Dame,all candidates are official.
