The south central Winnipeg riding Riel has existed since 1969.

Its northern boundary is Abinojii Mikanah (Bishop Grandin Boulevard), and its western boundary is the Red River. On the east, most of the riding extends to St. Anne's Road, with some southern parts of the riding ending at St. Mary's Road and Dakota Street. Its primary southern boundaries are Southglen Boulevard and Warde Avenue.

It's in the St. Vital area of Winnipeg, and includes the neighbourhoods of Meadowood,Southglenand the northern part of River Park South.

The riding's population is 22,610, according to Elections Manitoba's 2023 riding profile (which draws from data compiled during the 2021 census).

The median age of the riding is 44.4, the riding profile says older than the provincial median of 38.4. The median household income in the riding is $90,000.

Voting history

Since 1969, the riding has shifted between electing Progressive Conservative and NDP representatives. It was held by the NDP from 1999 to 2011, including three elections (2003, 2007 and 2011) won by the NDP's Christine Melnick. Rochelle Squires won the seat for the Progressive Conservatives in the past two elections.

As of Sept. 11, the nominated candidates for the 2023 election are:

• LAmber Kensley (Liberal).
• Mike Moyes (NDP).
• Rochelle Squires (Progressive Conservative incumbent).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after the election has been called. In Riel, all candidatesare official.
