What to know about the Steinbach riding for Manitoba's 2023 election

Southeastern Manitobas Steinbach riding has been around since 1990, but its boundaries changed in the 2018 riding redistribution, when it lost a large portion of its territory to the south.

Southeastern Manitoba's Steinbach riding has been around since 1990, but its boundaries changed in the 2018 riding redistribution, when it lost a large portion of its territory to the south.

The riding now includes its namesake, the city of Steinbach, as well as the communities of Mitchell and Blumenort.

Its population is 25,610, according to the Manitoba Bureau of Statistics, based on the 2021 census information collected in the province.

The median age of the riding is 33.2, according to the Elections Manitoba's 2023 riding profile, based on information from the 2021 census younger than the provincial median of 38.4.

Voting history

The Steinbach riding has only ever elected Progressive Conservative representatives. That includes incumbent Kelvin Goertzen, who won the seat with more than 80 per cent of ballots cast in the last three elections.

  • 1990 election onwards (seven general elections): Progressive Conservative.
  • 2011, 2016, 2019: Kelvin Goertzen (Progressive Conservative).

The nominated candidates for the 2023 election, as of Sept. 2, are:

  • Cyndy Friesen (Manitoba Liberal Party).
  • Kelvin Goertzen (Progressive Conservative - incumbent).
  • Gord Meneer (NDP).
  • Gabrielle Simard-Nadeau (Green Party).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after the election has been called. In Steinbach, all candidates are official.
