Driver arrested after 6-year-old boy hit by truck at Winkler, Man., intersection

A 50-year-old man from Plum Coulee, Man., is facing charges after a six-year-old childwas hit by a pickup truckat an intersection in Winkler, Man., on Monday afternoon.

A 50-year-old man from Plum Coulee, Man., is facing charges after a six-year-old childwas hit by a pickup truckat an intersection in Winkler, Man., on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services in Winkler arrived at the scene of the collision shortly after 1 p.m., the Winkler Police Service said in a news release posted on its Facebook page.

A police officer was patrolling the area when they saw a man driving a red Chevrolet Silverado turningeast onto Pembina Avenue from southbound Main Street and colliding with a child riding a bicycle.

The driver briefly stopped onthe road before "accelerating eastbound in an obvious attempt to leave the scene," the police service said. He was stopped by officers and arrested.

An officer and an off-duty doctorprovided first aid to the boy before paramedicstransported him tohospital in stable condition with "undetermined injuries," police said.

The driver faces a number of charges, including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, failure to stop after an accident causing bodily harm, and driving without a driver's license.

Pembina Avenue between 4th Street and Main Street was closed for a few hours and has since been reopened, police said Monday afternoon.
