28-year-old shot man with gun he coerced woman to buy, forced her to offer sexual services: Winnipeg police

A man who was recently released from an Alberta prisonhas been arrested again after he coerced a woman to buy a firearm that he later used to shoot another man, and also confined and assaulted the woman, forcing her to advertise sexual services, Winnipeg police say.

A man who was recently released from an Alberta prisonhas been arrested again after he coerced a woman to buy a firearm that he later used to shoot another man, and also confined and assaulted the woman, forcing her to advertise sexual services, Winnipeg police say.

The 28-year-old man is facing multiple charges after the string of crimes ended in his arrest following a chase during which he tried to escape byjumping about three storeysdown from a parkade earlier this week, Winnipeg police said in a Thursday news release.

Aninvestigation by the police service's domestic violence unit determined that while he was in an Edmonton prison, the man contacted the woman andcoerced her to get a weapons acquisition licence, police say.

After his release, he travelled to Winnipeg,contrary to the conditions of his release order. He and the woman met on Aug. 14at a retail store onSterling Lyon Parkway, where heinstructed her to buy asemi-automatic rifle andammunition for him, police say.

Police also allege thatduring the month of August, he forced the woman toadvertise sexual services onlineandgive him the income. She complied because she was physically assaulted, forcibly confined and"under constant watch" by the man, according to police.

Back-alley argument led to shooting: police

Police say that around noonon Tuesday, the 28-year-old man got into an argument in a back lane on the 200 block of Young Street, between Broadway and Portage Avenue, with a48-year-old manhe knew.

The 28-year-oldused the rifle that had been purchased earlier to shoot the older man in the lower body.

The victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition but later upgraded to stable. The 28-year-old fled,police say.

He was spotted by police around 2:30 p.m. that dayaroundCarlton Street and Graham Avenue. Officers chased him on foot to a multi-level parkade in the 200 block of Graham Avenue where,in an attempt to escape, he jumped about30 feet (rougly nine metres) to the ground, injuring himself, and was then arrested, according to police.

During the arrest, officers found about $800 in cashand 9.5 grams of fentanyl, police say.

A further investigation by the major crimes unitalso determined the man was connected witha robbery that took place on Aug. 11, during which he drew a knife on a 51-year-old man at a restaurant in the 1400 block of Ellice Avenue, according to police.

The 28-year-old Winnipeg man now faces more than two dozen charges, including forcible confinement, assault, procuring a person to provide sexual services, two counts of robbery and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He also faces numerous firearms-related charges, including discharging a firearm with intent.
