Winnipeg election investigation yields no charges

Elections Manitoba said Thursday it will not lay charges in connection with allegations of wrongdoing by NDP party members over a nominations race last fall.

Elections Manitoba said Thursday it will not lay charges in connection with allegations of wrongdoing by NDP party members over a nomination race last fall.

In December, longtime NDP member Gurmeet Gillcharged thatPremier Gary Doer's chief of staff had offered another member, Kaur Sidhu, a high-profile government job in exchange for staying out of the party's nomination race in the Maples riding of Winnipeg.

Gill alleged that Sidhu, a Winnipeg pharmacist, was offered a position with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in the deal. Sidhu did in fact withdraw.

The government referred the matter to Elections Manitoba, whichkeeps its investigations confidential unless charges are laid.
