If you were thinking of heading to The Forks to enjoy the warm weather this long weekend, you'll have to leave your skates at home.

Rising temperatures mean skating on rinks as well as the Red River Mutual Trail is shut down for the time being, saidLarissaPeck, marketing andcommunications coordinator for TheForks.

Peck said the river trail is still safe to walk onbut skating isn't recommended.

"I skated to work this morning and I was mostly walking on my skates," she said.

"It's like skating through a slurpee, that's a good analogy. I was thinking like rollerblading on a beach."

The site had to shut down skating due to warm weather for about a week in January and a few hours earlier this month.

Going into the long weekend, Peck said there will be plenty of action at The Forks even without skating.

"It's going to be a beautiful weekend and there's going to be a lot of action here at The Fork, so come out and enjoy, but definitely dress for the weather," she said.

Peck said skating will remain closed until temperatures drop again, but she's not convinced that will happen over the weekend.

"We're working with Mother Nature to kind of see where we can take it," she said.

If the river trail becomes unsafe, she said The Forks will post about it on social media and issue a news release.
