Pooches step up to the plate at Goldeyes game for Bark in the Park

Hundreds of four-legged friends wagged their little tails into the stands at Shaw ParkTuesday night as part of the Winnipeg Goldeyes' second-annualBark in the Park event.

It was a hot and muggy night for abaseball game, which meant there was a lot of panting going on. Luckily for the pooches, the Goldeyesprovided loads of water dishes and cool-down pools at the stadium to keep them hydrated and refreshed. There was also facilities on site for doggies to do their business.

Goldeyesowner, and former Winnipeg mayor, Sam Katz said Bark in the Park givesWinnipeg dog ownersa chance to enjoy some peanuts and crackerjacks with their furry sidekicks.

"We have wild dogs performing, we have the 'Pooch Smooch' cam here as well, we have the 7th inning fetch, as opposed to stretch," Katz said. "It's all about dogs, and most importantly, it's also about the Humane Society."

For every ticket sold, $2 will go to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Victoria and Nick brought their dogsSansa and Arya, affectionately named after characters in the Game of Thrones series, down to the park for the game between theGoldeyesand theSt. Paul Saints.

The Winnipeg Humane Society posted details about a giveaway on Facebook associated with the event, and that inspired Victoria to treat her dogs to the fun outing, she said.

"I thought, 'That would be kind of fun.'I've never really taken them out to a big public thing like this. They love people, so I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to spend some time with them this summer," Victoria said.

"Arya is a big suck and just loves making friends, and Sansa is doing pretty good, she's being pretty calm."

Nick added that seeing so many Winnipeg dogowners in one place in the summer is a great show of community spirit.

About 500 to 600 dog owners and 300 dogs were expected to attend.
