A Winnipeg hardware store is celebrating its fifth anniversary since reopening, though it has been a landmark in the city for decades.

Pollock's Hardware closed its doors in 2007 when its owners retired. But people in the community banded together to form a co-op so they could buy the north end mainstay.

The original building was built in 1922, and Mike Wolchok, the general manager told CBC News staff has worked hard to maintain its historic charm.

"Rather than modernize our store, we've been restoring our store over the last five years," said Wolchok.

"So the goal is that it gives you that kind of small town general store feel like you would have had back in the day."

Wolchok told CBC News the co-op has about 2,500 members and are looking to expand.

"I think there's some other neighbourhoods in the city that sort of have that same community spirit that we could service as well," he said.

People in the West Broadway neighbourhood have approached the co-op about a possible site on Sherbrook, he said, adding they've also looked at a Riverview location as well.

Festivities will carry through the day Saturday at Pollock's Hardware, located at 1407 Main Street, including a BBQ and pony rides in the afternoon.
