Man charged with stealing from Winnipeg store while looking after child

A 31-year-old man is accused of shoplifting at a store in Winnipeg's North End while looking after a child.

Police say man threatened security guard, used child's backpack to carry stolen goods

A 31-year-old man is accused of shoplifting at a store in Winnipeg's North End while looking after a child.

A security guard caught a man stealing candyat the store on Main Street near Boyd Avenue around 8 p.m. Monday, Winnipegpolice said in a news release.

The man threatened the security guard, then put the stolen items in the child's backpack and fled the store, police said.

An hour and a half later, officers found a suspect with a child about a block away. When police tried to arrest him, the man was unco-operative, and officers used a Taser to bring him into custody, the news release says.

Police seized a machete and an air gun from the man, they said.

The child was uninjured during the incident and was turned over to the care of his mother.

The 31-year-old man is charged with robbery, failing to provide the necessities of life to a child, two counts of possession of a weapon, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, resisting a peace officer and seven counts of failing to comply with a condition of a release order.
