Winnipeg mayor wants to bid for Grey Cup game

Winnipeg's mayor wants to pitch in a million dollars for the city's bid to host a Grey Cup game.

Sam Katz will put forward a motion to give nearly $700,000 in grants and $300,000 in in-kind contributions to the Winnipeg Football Club.

The city hopes the Grey Cup will be held in Winnipeg in either 2015 or 2016.

Organizers say hosting a Grey Cup will inject more than $100 million into the economy.

Regina is hosting the big game this year and the festivities are expected to bring nearly $125 million into the local economy.

"It's a game changer," said Kevin Dureau, who owns a Regina sports bar called the Press Box.

"Last year with the NHL not being around from October to January it changed it, this was supposed to be a bonus year, but this is gonna supersede it and anything we didn't make in NHL is definitely made up by the Riders being in the Grey Cup."

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers finished last in the East division this season.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will face Hamilton's Tiger Cats at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday.
