Winnipeg city council will have to vote on whether to cover $17 million in cost overruns for the construction of the new police headquarters.
The former Canada Post building on Graham Avenue is being redeveloped into a building that will house the Winnipeg Police Service's new headquarters.

Winnipeg city council will have to vote on whether to cover $17 million in cost overruns for the construction of the new police headquarters.

Councillors learned in recent weeks that the costs of redeveloping the old Canada Post building on Graham Avenue will be $75 million over original estimates.

Mechanical and electrical design changes and a backup generating system have accounted for most of the additional costs.

The city announced on Monday that officials have published a report asking council to approve the additional funds to complete the project.

Thereport proposes borrowing$15.2 million to cover the majority of thecost increases.

Councillors on the city's downtown development committee will get a first look at the report at a special meeting scheduled for Friday.
