Winnipeg police lay charges in rooming-house death

A 38-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with manslaughter in the rooming-house death of Ronald Harold McKinnon.

McKinnon, 54, was found bloodied and unconscious on Tuesday inside his suite in a large rooming house, commonly known as "murder mansion."

Police said they believe a party was underway at the home Monday night when a confrontation between two residents of the house broke out around 8 p.m.

As a result, McKinnon was badly injured.

Police said McKinnon was helped back to his room by other residents but was found dead the following day.

After autopsy results were released and a number of witnesses were interviewed, police made an arrest Thursday afternoon.

Robert Steward Maier, 38, has been charged with manslaughter. He remains in police custody.

McKinnons death is the city's third homicide of the year. It is alsothe third slaying in the past five years at the house in the 600 block of Balmoral Street.
