Propane tank, shovel thrown at police in meth-fuelled incidents

A propane tank was thrown through the back window of a police vehicle and a shovel was thrown at an officerin two separate incidents police believe were fuelled by meth.

Police say an officer was sitting in a parked cruiser in the 300 block of Redwood Avenue around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, investigating an unrelated matter when aman carrying the tank approached the car from behind.

Without a word, police say, he threw the full-size propane tank through the cruiser's rear window.

The officer was not injured.

Police arrested a 30-year-old Winnipeg man, who has been charged with assaulting a peace officer and mischief under $5,000. He has been detained in custody.

Shovel thrown, screwdriver pulled

The second incident began around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, when officers were called toDufferinAvenue near Salter Street after someone was assaulted with a screwdriver.

They found a man, who police believe was high on meth, near the area of Aikins Street and Stella Avenue. Officers followed him to the backyard of a house on Stella Avenue, where he picked up a snow shovel.

After the man ignored their commands to drop the shovel, one of the officers approached him with a Taser. The man started walking away but then turned and threw the shovel, narrowly missing the officer, police said.

The officer fired the stun gun twice, but missed both times. Police say the man pulled out a screwdriver and started threatening officers, but fled when more officers arrived.

When officers caught up with him, the man allegedly threatened an officer with the screwdriver, and this time an officer managed to take the suspect down with theTaser.

He was arrested without injury.

Brett Mikal Keeper, 26, faces several charges, including two counts of assaulting a peace officer, and assault with a weapon. He is also charged on outstanding arrest warrants for failing to attend court and failing to comply with a probation order.
