Winnipeg shelter holds 'sleep out' for homeless animals

Staff and volunteers at a local animal rescue shelter in Winnipeg are trying to raise money and awareness of homeless cats and dogs by sleeping outside for 24 hoursbeginning Saturday afternoon.

The event started at noon at D'Arcy's A.R.C. located on 730 Century Street, and will end on Sunday.

"It's spring and right now there are literally thousands of homeless animals on the street," said D'Arcy Johnston, the owner of the shelter. "They're finding places to sleep in, boxes, little houses, somewhere where it's warm to sleep."

Staff are camping out in front of the building, during which time they ask people to drop by with donations for the shelter.

They are taking things such as cat litter, bleach, pet food, paper towels or a monetary donation.
