Winnipeg students celebrate opening of human rights museum all week

Students in Manitoba's largest school division are getting in on the celebration of the opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Students in Manitoba's largest school division are getting in on the celebration of the opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The museum holds its official opening on Friday.

Monday the Winnipeg School Division kicked off a special week of activities under the banner "Everybody has the Right."

The official opening took place at St. John's High School with stories from students involved in human rights initiatives, dance, and a video about human rights and diversity in the school division.

During the coming week, two students from each of the Winnipeg School Division's 77 schools will
Students from across the division will help create a giant mural at Luxton School comprised of tiles created by two students from each school.

"Every school's going to represent this mural and send over two students throughout the week," said division spokesperson Rob Riel.

The result will be a huge mosaic about human rights.

Riel said having the museum in its backyard is a huge plus.

"I think it's very special," he said. "I think with the opening of the museum and our school division being so diverse, it allows our students the ability to learn and be a part of other cultures."

Riel said the museum will give students and teachers a real eduational resource.
