Winnipeggers lace up for cancer research at Terry Fox Run

Hundreds of Winnipeggers are catching their breath after taking part in the Terry Fox Run Sunday morning at Assiniboine Park.

Dave West has been running for years. He said this year was different because his sister died from cancer in June.

As soon as it's a family member, it has a little more meaning to it, said West. It makes you feel a little more susceptible to it, I guess.

"You're raising money for something you may need help for later on, as well as everyone else.

Like West, Vicki Rempel ran for a loved one her father, a two-time cancer survivor.

In her job as a health care aid, Rempel has seen cancer research make a real difference.

Ive seen changes, said Rempel. Ive seen early diagnosis; I've seen people survive who may not in previous years have survive, so I know it's working, I know it's helping. I know it's worthwhile and that's why I'm here.

To date, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than $650 millionfor cancer research.
