2 dead in Que. crash at notorious intersection

Two people are dead following a head-on crash at a notorious intersection in Ste-Genevieve-de-Berthier, Que.

Two people are dead following a head-on crash at a notorious intersection in Ste-Genevieve-de-Berthier, Que.

The collision happened just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on route 158 near route 345, located about an hour northeast of Montreal.

It happenedat the same intersectionas two other fatal crashes.

The last one, in February,involved a head-on crash betweena van and a school bus.Five men in the van died.

In 2001, thathighway junctionwas flagged as risky after a fatal crash that killed one woman.

Warning signs and flashing yellow lights were installed to improve visibility.

But a roundabout, which was recommended by the coroner, was never built.

The latest crash involved a car and a truck, according to Quebec provincial police.

Sgt.Genevive Bruneau says it's possible the car was trying to turn onto Route 158 from 345 but entered the wrong lane by mistake.

"After that, the truck could not avoid the car, so the front of the truck hit the driver's side of the car," she said.

The driver anda passengerin the car, a 75-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman from Quebec City,were transported to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

A third vehicle swerved to avoid the crash and ended up in the ditch. That driver was not injured.

Police are still investigating the crash.
