Minor charged in fatal stabbing of 16-year-old boy outside Montreal high school

A minor has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the fatal stabbing of Jannai Dopwell-Bailey, a 16-year-old Montrealer.

A minor has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with thefatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy outside his Montrealhigh school on Monday.

Jannai Dopwell-Bailey was stabbedin the parking lot of Mile End high school in the city's Cte-des-NeigesNotre-Dame-de-Grceborough.

According to police,there was a fight outsideinvolving a group of teens.

Police say they arrested the minor on Thursday evening and heappeared in youth court on Friday afternoon. His identity is not being released due to his age.

If the teenis convicted, the Crown will seek to have himsentenced as an adult, according to Radio-Canada.

The youth will remain in detention until at least next Tuesday. A date will be set for a bail hearing.

Montreal police were looking for up to three suspects on the day of the attack. Police said videosposted to social media in the following days,where people were seen mockingDopwell-Bailey's death, would play a big part in the investigation.

"He got arrested, yes. But can he bring back my son? No,"said the victim's mother, Charla Dopwell. "I have the same feeling inside. I feel just sick to my heart."

She also urged police to arrestother people who wereinvolved in her son's death.

The news of the arrest and the court appearance comes on the same day families and friends are expected to gather at a vigil at the scene of the attack to remember the teen.

Dopwell will be there at 6 p.m. She has described her son as loving and caring, with apassion for dancing and rapping.

"It makes me feel thankful, grateful that the whole community is coming out for my son because it's something very horrific for mothers," she said. "I thank everybody who wants to come out and support me and my family and help ...find the murders and get justice."
