Brossard bans plastic bags in stores for fall 2016

Despite opposition from the Canadian Plastic Bags Association, the change is slated to come into effect as of September 2016.

The City of Brossardhas voted in favour of a banon plastic shopping bags in stores starting next fall.

The change comes into effect as ofSeptember 2016. The South Shore communitywill also undertake a transition period to phase out the plastic bags while also launching an awareness campaign.

The vote passedunanimously,with city councillors saying it was an ecological move.

The Canadian Plastic Bags Association hadvoiced its opposition,claiming Brossard hadn't properly consulted its citizens or merchants.
