CBC's Do Crew lends a hand at Chez Doris

This pastSaturdaythe CBC Montreal Do Crew took on the mission of organizing the clothing depot at Chez Doris.

Not only did we have a great time together, but we left the room looking completely different from when we arrived.

Strangers at first, we quicklyfell into a groove of working together over the course of the four hours we were there.

When we first entered the room there was a big wooden crate full of donated clothes. We were able to sort through hundreds of sweaters, blouses, pants and shoes and carefully place them all.

A great deal of energy and love went into the work we did there and it shows.

Thanks so much to first-time Do Crew volunteers Hlne, Marie-Claude, Kate, Johanne and Chris for diving into the challenge and doing such a great job!

ABOUT CHEZDORIS:

Chez Doris is a non-profit organization that has been helping Montreal women for 35 years.

Some of the women who walk through the doors are homeless. Others are in financial, emotional or physical distress.

In all cases, the women need help and Chez Doris offers a range of services including two free meals everyday, a safe place to take a nap and a clean change of clothes.

This is just a taste of the work that goes on to help give these women access to the basic necessities.

When they are ready and able to move beyond the basics,Chez Doris also offers free access to recreational and social services.

"There is a great need for this service as, in 2013-2014 alone, there were more than 2,053visits to the clothing room," saidTalarDikijian, chair of the board atChezDoris.

"It'sa key component in ensuring a welcoming environment for the homeless women."

Dikijian says this room gives many women access to adequate clothing throughout the year.

Chez Doris is always accepting donations of clean clothing.

At the moment, the room is most in need ofscarves, hats, gloves, new underwear, socks, shoes and slippers.
