COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know on Tuesday

A day after extending the red-zone restrictions, Quebec Premier Franois Legault hinted there could be some allowances, however slight, for the holiday season if the coronavirus is contained. Here's what you need to know.

  • Quebec reported 963new cases of COVID-19 and 19 more deaths on Tuesday, fourof which were in the past 24 hours. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 101,885confirmedcases and6,172people have died.

A day after extending the red-zone restrictions, Quebec Premier Franois Legaultsaid there could be some allowances, however slight, for the holiday season if the coronavirus is contained.

"For Christmas, I really hope and I'm confident that in 28 days, we'll be able to maybe not have big parties for Christmas, but to be able to see our families," he said.

Legaultisfacingcriticism from the opposition parties in Quebec City for the uncertainty around the duration of the partial lockdown.

But speaking to reporters Tuesday, Legault said the situation is "evolving" and that his government and public experts are making the best decisions possible based on the information they have at the time.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Fever.
  • New or worsening cough.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Sudden loss of smell without a stuffy nose.
  • Gastrointestinal issues (such as nausea, diarrhea).

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face coveringwhen physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible.
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
