COVID-19 in Quebec: What you need to know on Wednesday

Quebec reported 471 new cases today, with a second wave of the virus underway in the province. Here's what you need to know.

Province clarifies rules around police as second wave takes hold

  • Quebec reported 471 new cases of COVID-19 and onenew deathWednesday. Threeother deaths, occurring between Sept. 16and Sept. 21, werealso reported. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been69,088confirmedcases and5,809peoplehave died.

Quebec Public Security Minister Genevive Guilbaultsought to clarifythe government's message around the enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions, saying police won't be allowed to enter aprivate residencewithout consent or a warrant.

"I want to be clear on this: the inviolability of private homes is a very important right, fundamental in Quebec," Guilbault said at a news conference Wednesday in Quebec City.

Guilbaultadded, however,thatif the epidemiological situation worsens "dramatically,"the government would consider giving that power to police.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Fever.
  • New or worsening cough.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Sudden loss of smell without a stuffy nose.

Quebec government reminders for preventing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a mask or face coveringwhen physical distancing is not possible. Wearing a mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces across the province.
  • Stay at least two metres away from other people as much as possible.
  • Self-isolate for 14 days after returning from a stay outside the country.
