The city's official opposition party is furious after Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre has suspended plans to add a concrete barrier to a busy bike path in the Plateau.

"Three times the mayor has voted for this and now that we're on the edge of doing it, he withdraws his support. He cancels the contract," said Projet Montreal leader Luc Ferrandez.

Work began 2 weeks ago on the de Brbeuf bike path, but was halted this week.

The plan was to build a concrete barrier along the bike path on de Brbeuf Street, between Saint-Grgoire and Rachel, to separate it from street.

But Coderre said he is not cancelling the project. It's on hold following some residents' voicing concerns over safety and lack of parking.

"We have to put up some room...for the bike, but at the same time there are some cars. There is some safety issue and want to make sure everything is in order."
