Inmates injured as guard opens fire at Donnacona penitentiary

Quebec provincial police are investigating after an inmate was injured when shots were fired at the federal penitentiary in Donnacona Thursday night.

Police say at least 1 shot was fired after fight broke out between 2 inmates

Quebec provincial police are investigating after shots were fired and an inmate was injured at the Donnacona Institution last night.

According to police, two inmates, one aged 30and theother 41, were involved in a violent altercation at themaximum-securityfederal penitentiary for men, locatedsouthwest of Quebec City.

Fearing for the life of one of the inmates, guards first used a gas to try and break up the fight, said police spokeswomanAnn Mathieu.

When that didn't work, they fired at least one shot, she said.

One inmatewas brought to hospital withseriousbut not life-threatening injuries. The othersustained minor injuries.
