The borough of Cte-des-NeigesNotre-Dame-de-Grce wants to limit the number of fast-food restaurants in its territory by allowing new ones only on major arteries.

Construction of new fast-food joints will be limited to:

  • Dcarie Boulevard between Queen Mary Road and Vzina Street
  • Saint-Jacques Street between Benny Avenue and West Broadway Street
  • Plaza Cte-des-Neiges shopping centre

Existing restaurants will be allowed to stay. The borough defines a fast-food restaurant as one that offers only service at the counter and disposable plates and utensils.

The regulations do not take into account what type of food is served, where it comes from,or how it's processed.

The initiative is part of the borough's nine-point plan to encourage healthy living. Other points include incentives for biking, car-sharing, more farmers' market, and more community gardens.

The changes are expected to take effect by Feb. 1, according to city councillor Lionel Perez.
