Father, son with Montreal roots killed in Alberta avalanche

A father and son with Montreal roots are dead after an avalanche in Lake Louise, Alta.

A Parks Canada release says RCMP requested the aid of Parks Canada Search and Rescue personnel to help search for the two Saturday afternoon.

The release says a Parks Canada dog handler found the victims buried under debris at the base of Mount Fairview on the shore of Lake Louise.

A Parks Canada official told CBC News that the father and son had rented a toboggan and were found away from more popular trails around the mountain's base.

"We do have a lot of users that go for a walk or travel up and down the right hand side [of the lake] but these folks had wandered over to the left hand side of the lake under some fairly steep slopes," said Bill Hunt, a resource conservation manager with Parks Canada.

The pair were reported missing by the management of their hotel a few days ago. Radio-Canada is describing them as a man in his 30s and an adolescent male who had been on holiday in the area for about a week when they went missing.

Their names are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
