Magdalen Islands spill: Hydro-Qubec pipeline seriously corroded, report says

A report by Quebec's Environment Ministry suggests that an oil leak in September 2014 on the Magdalen Islands could have been avoided.

A report by Quebec'sEnvironment Ministry suggests that an oil leak in September 2014 on the Magdalen Islands could have been avoided.

A hundred thousand litres of diesel leaked from aHydro-Qubecpipeline in the incident.

The report states that the pipeline was seriously corroded.

The day after the leak, an ultrasound inspection found almost 6,500 corrosion anomalies along the pipeline, the majority in the 200-metre section where the leak happened.

The report concluded thatHydro-Qubechad failed in not taking the safety measures needed to maintain the pipeline.

Hydro-Qubec pleaded guilty to one charge of releasing a banned material and was ordered to pay a fine of $400,000.
