Listen to shoppers' concerns, group tells Jean-Talon Market

A group of citizens wants to bring changes to the Jean-Talon Market and they are harnessing public opinion to back them up.

Les Amis du March Jean-Talon spent Saturday asking shoppers to fill out a survey about their experiences and hundreds took part.

Among some of their concerns were:

  • Not enough made-in-Quebec products.
  • It's hard to tell the difference between producers and resellers.
  • Cars can go through the market before 11 a.m.

Johanne Beaulieu goes to the market twice a week and she is bothered by the cars that compete with shoppers.

"I find this a bit deplorable, because there are so many people on weekend mornings," she said.

Les Amis du March Jean-Talon claims that Montreal's public markets authority doesn't listen to shoppers' concerns, hence this survey blitz.

"Citizens are not part of the board [of Marchs Publics de Montral]," said Sarah McMahon-Sperber of Les Amis.

"So there's no real structure in place for that to happen and that's all we were trying to create."

Les Amis du March Jean-Talon will write a report based on the survey results and share it with the City of Montreal and Marchs Publics de Montral.
