The main suspect in series of allegedbreak-ins and sexual assaults at Laval University is now facing 12 charges.

Thierno-Oury Barry, a 19-year-old international student born in Ivory Coast, appeared in court Wednesday and is now facing the following charges:

  • Four charges of breaking and entering and committing a criminal act, specified as sexual assault.
  • Six charges of breaking and entering with the intention to commit a criminal act.
  • Two charges of attempting to break and enter.

The Crown says the12 charges pertain to 12 differentvictims.

Barry was a new student at the school. He was pursuing a bachelor's degree in economics.

He was originally charged with breaking and entering last Saturday, but the Crown says that charge has been absorbed by the new charges.

Crown spokesperson Ren Verret said they chose to include the sexual assault charge with the break and enter charge because if convicted, Barry faces life in prison. If convicted of sexual assault, the maximum sentence is 10 years.

Barry will remain in custody until his bail hearing, whichis scheduled for Nov. 4.

The charges come after Quebec City police received at least 15 complaintsabout a man who had come into their rooms at astudent residence in the middle of the night nearly two weeks ago

Another suspect was interrogatedby police but released on a promise to appear. Both men were expelled during the legal proceedings.
