Lev Tahor: border agency arrests 6 for immigration issues

The lawyer for an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect says six members have been arrested by the Canada Border Services Agency over suspected immigration issues.

Arrests are not related to ongoing child custody case, says community member

The lawyer for an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect says six members havebeenarrested by the Canada Border Services Agency over suspected immigration issues.

LawyerGuidyMamannsaysCBSAagents went looking yesterday for sevenLevTahormembers who had either been ordered removed from Canada or had their status expired.

Mamannsays five of those people, as well as one other person who was found to have alleged immigration issues,were apprehended inChatham, Ont.

He says he's working withCBSAto ensure the two other people authorities had been seeking comply.

Some families in theLevTahorcommunity are at the centre of an ongoing child custody case, but a community member says those arrested are not involved in the child welfare case.

Mamannsays the community was terrified during theCBSAarrests, as about 20 armed officers went from house to house looking for adults and children.

He says he's hopeful that some of the adults who were apprehended will be released quickly byCBSA.
