Montreal North mayoral byelection to be held by mid-May

The City of Montreal plans to hold a byelection to replace former Montreal North mayor Gilles Deguire before May 22.

The City of Montreal will hold abyelectionto elect a new borough mayor inMontreal North before May 22.

Gilles Deguire, the formerborough mayor, is under criminal investigation for an unspecified wrongdoing. That investigationpromptedhim to step down lastThursday.

Deguire, who took officein 2009, worked as a Montreal police officer for 30 years.

He worked for ten years as a political attach forBourassa-SauvMNA LineBeauchampand served as Union Montreal's vice-president in the east end of Montrealisland.

Montreal police are heading the investigation.Deguirehas not been charged.

This will bethe third byelection for the position of Montreal North borough mayor since 2007.
