Montreal outdoor concert too loud for some

Not everyone is looking forward to the Osheaga Music Festival scheduled at Jean Drapeau Park on Montreal's Ste. Hlne Island this weekend.

Some people living in St. Lambert, a city across the St. Lawrence River on the South Shore, say music coming from outdoor concerts in the area is too loud. They have been calling the city to do something about it.

Three weeks ago, there was the Vans Warped punk festival. Last weekend it was the Heavy MTL rock festival. This weekend it'll be mostly indie rock with Osheaga.

For Martin Lafond, who lives in St. Lambert, it's become too much.

"The noise is horrible. It's very loud," he told CBC News.

Michel Panaioti, who also lives in St. Lambert, said the seemingly non-stop string of concerts is making life tough on his family.

"You can virtually feel the windows vibrate. My kids don't fall asleep very easily," he said.

The two men are part of a growing group of residents asking the city of Montreal to limit the number of concerts at Jean Drapeau.

But park spokesperson Nathalie Lessard says noise comes with the territory.

"You live close to the city, so you have the advantage of being 10 minutes away from downtown. But there are also disadvantages, and one of those is certainly the noise that comes from different events."

The Ville-Marie borough told CBC that Jean Drapeau is a special park, and it might not fall under the bylaw that regulates noise levels everywhere else in the city.

The borough says it's currently seeking legal advice about the issue.
