The Montreal police service's major crimes unit arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a July 29 homicide in the Lachine borough.

In a news release Wednesday, the Service de police de la Ville de Montral (SPVM) stated that officers initially deemed the death of a 64-year-old woman suspicious, but later confirmed it as a homicide.

Police responded to a 911 call at around 7:45 p.m. and found her unconscious in an apartment building on 32nd Avenue, near Victoria Street. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Officers arrested the 28-year-old suspect on Tuesday at his residence in the LaSalle borough, and he will appear Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse to face first-degree murder charges, police say.

This was the 21st homicide of the year on territory covered by the Montreal police.
