Man armed with sharp objects shot, killed by Montreal police near Old Brewery Mission

A manarmed with a sharp object in each handwas shot and killed Friday afternoon by Montreal police,Quebec's Bureau of Independent Investigations said.

The man was suspected of having attacked another person with the objects inside a building at the corner of Ren-Lvesque Boulevard and St-Urbain Street around 2:30 p.m., said Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursire.

Bystanders followed the suspect into an alley near the Old Brewery Mission, on St-Laurent Boulevard, where he was stopped by officers.

The suspect made threatening gestures towards the officers before he was shot, Lacoursire said. The officers fired multiple times, striking the suspect at least once in the upper body.

He was taken to hospital, where he later died of his wounds. The injuries to the person who was attacked in the building are not considered life-threatening.

The case has now been transferred to Quebec's Bureau of Independent Investigations.

A team of nine Bureau investigators will investigate the shooting.The independent agency is called to investigate whenever a civilian is killed or injured during a police intervention.

Police have put up a perimeter in the area. As of Friday night, sections of three streets remainedclosed:

• St-Laurent Boulevard, betweenSt-Antoine and Viger.
• Viger Avenue, betweenSt-Laurent and St-Urbain.
• St-UrbainStreet, between Viger and St-Antoine.
