Montreal police fatally shoot screwdriver-wielding man

A 58-year-old man shot multiple times during an operation involving Montreal police Tuesday has died. The investigation has been transferred to Quebec's independent investigations bureau.

Police say that around 7 p.m.they received a call about a man destroying items in his apartment, according to a statement from the bureau, known by its French acronym, BEI.

When police arrived at the scene, near thecorner ofRobillardandSt-Andrstreets, not far from Berri-UQMMetro,the man confronted them with a screwdriverin each hand, the statement said.

The 58-year old man shot multiple times during an operation involving Montreal police Tuesday has died, and the investigation has been transferred to Quebec's independent investigations bureau (BEI).

Police tried to subdue him with a stun gun and rubber bullets,but were unsuccessful. Officers then used their firearmssome time between7:19 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., when Urgences-Santarrived at the scene.

Twelve BEI investigators are now working to confirm these preliminarydetails, transmitted by Montreal police and Urgences-Sant.

They have recruited the Quebec provincial police forceto help in theinvestigation.

The city's ambulance services said the man was in cardiac arrest when hewas transported to hospital.

The BEI is mandated to take over investigating all incidents in which a person is injured or killed during a police operation.
