MUHC lowers one of its parking rates at new superhospital

The express parkinglots at the MUHC superhospital are located on ground level, right in front of the hospital doors, giving patients and family members easy access.

But that access came at a price $50 a day.

In response to widespread complaints, the MUHC's parking committee re-examined those rates.Now anything between 61 minutes and 24 hours will be $30.

MarioDi Carlo,co-chairman of the MUHC's patient committee, said the move isa good first step.

"It's a great initiative," he said.

"It's an answer as well to many complaints from patients and visitors who didn't realize the rates going in. I think $30 is a bit more palatable."

The parking committee will continue to look at other parking fees.

Highest rate in province

Di Carlo hopes the MUHC will also consider lowering the regular parking rate, which is $25 per day in the underground parking garage.

Other hospitals max out around $23 a day, Di Carlo said, making the MUHC one of the most expensive health-care institutionsin the province at which to park.

Patient advocates are worried the high prices could deter people from seeking care.

Frequent users, such as cancer patients, are offered a reduced rate, but Di Carlo would like to see that expanded.

Last month, Quebec ombudsman, Raymonde Saint-Germain, said it was investigating parking fees at the superhospital. That investigation is still underway
