The Quebec government has confirmed that it is abolishing school board elections, after months of talking about it.

A month and a half ago, Education Minister Franois Blais made his intentions to abolish school board elections in favour of a new regional administration system.

Quebec's federation of school boards denounced the move, calling it anti-democratic.

The previous education minister, Yves Bolduc, had already announced his intention to end school board elections in the fall, after poor turnout forthe November 2 vote.

The current minister confirmed it Friday morning.

He also said a number of school boards would be merged.
