Pointe-Claire family skips giving Christmas presents to help Syrian refugees

A Pointe-Claire family is skipping giving Christmas presents this year and is instead sending gifts to a Syrian refugee family in Greece.

The Mckenna family was inspired to help after visiting the Greek island of Kalymnos, where refugees have been arriving.

On the island,Maureen Mckenna got to know a local Greek family helping Syrian refugees.

"They are going through hard times and they're spending half their day helping out the refugees doing what they could," Mckenna said.

This Christmas they decided to help by collecting clothes, belts and knapsacks for refugees in Greece. They received donations from family and friends, which will be sent to Greece in January.

"The world is really small these days ... you wonder what's the solution, it's just overwhelming. But then you realize just one person at a time doing something small does make a difference," Mckenna said.
