Quebec vows more help for parents of severely disabled children

Lucie Charlebois, the Quebec minister for public health, announced Friday additional measures to help families starting in September.

The Quebec government has promised toprovide more support toparents who care forseverelydisabled children.

Public Health MinisterLucieCharleboisannounced Friday that additional measures to help families will begin inSeptember.

"The money we're talking about will give them more breathing room," Charlebois said. "Because these moms can't leave to enter the labour market."

Parents have long been pushing for more financial aid for those that act as caregivers to their children

They currently get close to $4,000 per year from both the provincial and federal government.

Foster families, on the other hand, can receive up toas much as $37,000.

The details of the plan haven't been released yet so it's unclear whether or not the help will come in the form of financial aid,additional care and services, or both.

There are an estimated2,000 families acrossQuebec caring fora severelydisabled child.
