Squatters lived in downtown building that caught fire, firefighter says

Police are investigating after a fire broke out this morning on the top floor of the three-storey building in downtown Montreal.

A spokespersonsays the fire started around5:40 a.m.onDrummondStreet north of Ste-Catherine Street.

A woman suffered second-degree burns in the fire and was taken to hospital.

A firefighter on the scene told CBC reporterEliasAbboudthat squatters had been living in the building.

Police said the building was "abandoned" and no one should have been living there.

It took 30firefighters a little over an hour to bring the fire under control, said aspokesperson for the Montreal fire department.

Drummond Street reopened to traffic shortly after 8 a.m. Police are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
