New map shows how Montreal's 68 Metro stations got their names

Taking a ride on the Montreal Metro also means taking a trip back through Quebec history. At least that's how it looks on this map by Gilles Laporte, a history professor at Cgep du Vieux-Montral.

What's in a name? When it comes to Montreal's Metro stations, Gilles Laporte's answer would be: a slice of Quebec history. (CBC)

Taking a ride on theMontrealMetro also means taking a trip back through Quebec history.

At least that's how it looks on a new map assembled byGilles Laporte, a history professor atCgepduVieux-Montral and lecturer at l'Universit du Qubec Montral.

In agraphicwidely circulated online,Laporteoffers up details on the namesake of each station, from the more obvious, such as former mayor Jean Drapeau (Yellow line) to the more obscure, such as Namur(Orange line),a city in Belgium.

The map has also led to criticism about the androcentricnaming of Metro stations.

A Facebook group calledDcider entre hommespoints out very few Metro stations are named after women.
