Man shot dead at Montreal metro station

A man was killed and a police officer slashed with a knife Friday at Montreal's Bonaventure metro station, a public transit hub serving the Via Rail train station.

A man is dead and a police officer is being treated for knife wounds after a shootingat Montreal's Bonaventure metro stationFriday afternoon.

Ambulance services confirmed theman died from gunshot wounds. The officer suffered knife wounds to the head and upper body, but they are not considered life-threatening.

Eyewitnesses report seeing two people rushed out on stretchersafter hearing three shots near the station's De La Gauchetire exit.

TV images show paramedics performing CPR on at least one of theinjured as he was wheeled to an ambulance.

A second police officer was treated for shock.

A witness told CBC reporter Kristin Falcao thathe saw a man at theticket booth walking away from police officers, refusing to stop. The witness said the man ran with officers in pursuit, and disappeared around a corner. Shots were then heard.

The dead man is believed to be in his 20s.

Police said De la Cathedrale Street is closed between St-Antoine and De laGauchetire Street, and wantdrivers to avoid the area.

The metro's orange linewas closed in both directions between Berri-UQM and Lionel-Groulx immediately after the shooting, with service gradually resuming about an hour later.

The orange line is not stopping at the Bonaventure station until further notice.

Bonaventure services Montreal's Via Rail station and the island's commuter train lines.

Via Rail and the AMT said there were no delays in their service.

The investigation was handed over to Quebec provincial police.

In Quebec, it is customary for a separate police force to investigate when another has been involved in an incident where there have been injuries or death.
