Suspected fentanyl lab leads to raid in Montreal North

Montreal police searched a vacant store in Montreal North in connection with an ongoing investigation into an "active organization" suspected of producing synthetic drugs.

Montreal police raided a vacantstorein Montreal North on Sunday inconnection with an ongoinginvestigation into an "active organization" suspected of producing synthetic drugs.

Const. Manuel Couture says investigators believe ric Tremblay, a 41-year-old who wascharged Saturday with drug trafficking and productionof syntheticdrugs, often visitedthe storeon Monselet Street.

Investigators wearing hazmat suits searched the locationthis morning, butCouture says no dangerous chemicals were found.

On Saturday, police dismantled aclandestine drug lab in an industrial section ofDorval,which they suspect was set up for the manufacturing offentanyl,a powerfulopioidresponsible for a wave offatal overdoses across the country.

They also searchedTremblay'shome in Laval.

Couture says Quebec provincial police are assisting with the ongoinginvestigation.

Fentanylis estimated to be 80 times as powerful as morphine and hundreds of times more powerful than heroin, according to the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials in Quebec Citysaid earlier this month 11people have overdosed, threefatally,after ingesting the narcotic in recent months.
