Texas Ebola cases worry Quebec's frontline health workers

Nurses in Quebec are worried about being put on the front lines in the struggle to contain Ebola.

The second case of a health care worker in Dallas, TX contracting Ebola has frontline hospital workers raising questions and concerns about Quebecs capacity to deal with the disease at home.

"The protocols are not clear. Who acts, who is responsible," said Rgine Laurent of the federation representing Quebec nurses.

In Montreal, two hospitals have been designated to handle possible Ebola cases: Ste-Justine Hospital for children and Notre-Dame Hospital for adults.

But the nurses union said health care workers in other institutions want to ensure theyre prepared for a case, too.

Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) president Linda Silas said nurses across the country have voiced similar concerns.

"They are telling us they're not prepared. We've heard stories of nurses trying the isolation suits. The arms are too short, the neck wasn't covered,"she said.

Quebec Public Health Director Horacio Arruda said there are measures already in place, and that they wouldnt be changed for the time being.

Meanwhile, the CFNU is asking the Canadian government to do an immediate risk assessment to determine if the training and equipment in place across the country is enough to deal with confirmed cases of Ebola.
