UPAC boss Robert Lafrenire's mandate renewed

Robert Lafrenire, chosen to lead the province's anti-corruption unit in 2011, will remain as head of the unit for five more years.

The head of the province's anti-corruption unit will stay on for another five-yearmandate.

RobertLafrenirewas chosen to lead the unit, known by its French acronymUPAC, in 2011.

His initial five-year mandate expiredon March 28, but thegovernment temporarilyextended it while officials considered a replacement.

At a news conference in Quebec City today,Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux said there were three names in the running for the job,but the government opted for continuity and chose to keep Lafrenire in his role.

Lafrenirehad a long career in policing before he was named to the unit.

"I love my job," he told CBC News on Tuesday."And I'm not yet finished that job."

In the last 5 years, UPAC has made 164 arrests and audited 2,000 companies.The unit was based on New York City's Department of Investigation (DOI)one of the oldest law-enforcement organizations in the United States.
