Striking UQAM teaching assistants reach tentative deal with university

After a week of strikes and blockades, the union representing student employees at the University of Quebec in Montreal has reached a tentative agreement with the university.

Agreement with university still needs to be approved by union members

University administrationhas reached a tentative agreement with striking student employees at theUniversity of Quebec in Montreal.

Roughly 3,000teaching assistants and researchers, represented by the unionSTUE,have been on strike since Dec. 7.

They still need to vote to approve the deal.

The teaching assistants havebeen without a contract since the end of 2013.

Last week, teaching assistantsblocked entrances at UQAM to protest stalled negotiations.

The university thenobtained atemporary injunction to guarantee access to its facilities.
